Transition

After obtaining my AA degree here at CCBC I plan to attend Stevenson University again. Apart of my transition will include interacting with the student body more to avoid separation. Tinto talks about the third and last phase being important solely because you embrace new patterns for every day life during this phase. I plan to do exactly that. Embracing the new surroundings and newly found group will promote self growth.

My nombre; Amia Fowlkes

Good evening to all of my fellow classmates, friends and viewers!

My name is Amia Fowlkes and it has truly been interesting discovering true meaning and the history of my first and last name. Years ago, before i began inquiring about my name's origin i had no idea that it had an interesting story behind it. My Great Aunt Pam, who is the youngest of all her siblings, named me. She was more like my Father's sister than his Aunt and she suggested my name for me. At around age 14 I found out that my name name was derived from the Arabic name Amir and Amira meaning "Prince" and "Princess". BEcause my name has no "r", the meaning is changed significantly. The name Amia is an Old English name and means "Beloved". It is given to infant girls and usually means that the child is greatly loved by someone other than the biological parents. Here's a link to look at to check out some info on my name. http://www.thinkbabynames.com/meaning/0/Amia

Fowlkes. It is true and it is GREAT! This is what my Grandfather used to say about our last name. My last name was not common in my community while growing up. While attending 5 different schools over a 12 year span, I've only met one other student with the last name Fowlkes. Based on readings from many different cites, my last name was popular amongst Englishmen in Welsh and the United Kingdom. (Harry Potter is my cousin) The original spelling was Foulk, however, after years of misspelling it has changed to FOWLKES.  http://www.houseofnames.com/fowlkes-family-crest

I think that my full name is unique Due to the fact that Arabic names are derived from so many other words, and also have a ton of different meanings, its hard to exclude the possibility that my first name is Arabic. My last name also happens to be a mystery! I've searched high and low, but still there is not a hand full of people with my last name. I just face the fact that its rare. Both of my names are RARE and solely my own. I don't have to share them with a million people.

I have learned to embrace the fact that my name is different. I embrace it as short and not often used. My first name is short and often mispronounced and my last name is rare and often mis spelled. My TRUTH...
